Meeting for the First Time

Yesterday was the first day of our trip. We all met at the Portland Airport and realized that our group couldn’t have been any better! We have kids from all backgrounds and cultures that make this group very diverse and special. After everyone had arrived we shuttled to our campsite and started packing our gear for our biking trip.  We are all really excited and can't wait for the next month together!

Happy Birthday America

Our bike ride today was long and mountainous. Biking to Cape Lookout, we passed through small towns and watched their Fourth of July parades and festivities.  It was so cool to see the way other places celebrate the 4th of July. The day took us over mountainous areas but were rewarded with beautiful scenic overlooks and stopped for a great lunch that tasted even better after our morning ride. When we arrived at the campground, cook crew made a very yummy pesto pasta for dinner. The campsite was right next to the ocean, so we got to see the sun set over the beautiful Pacific, our own type of Fourth of July fireworks!

Humburg Mountain to Harris Beach

Today we biked 50 miles from Humburg Mountain to Harris Beach. It was a very hilly ride-one of the hills was 800 feet above sea level! However, the beautiful scenery made it all worth it! I couldn't believe I was able to bike that, it was such a great sense of accomplishment and I can't wait for tomorrows challenge! When we got to Harris Beach we were happy to set up camp next to a beautiful beach with many offshore rocks and shells in the sand. We slept under the stars with stomachs full of mac-n-cheese, looking forward to tomorrow's adventure.

Sea Lions

Today we visited the sea lion caves! After riding for a while, we were on a hill and we stopped to go down into a smelly cave, where we watched some sea lions! Then we continued on the hill until it was over, we kept going and after stopping at a Safeway we arrived at the campsite with enough time to visit the sand dunes. It was fun to run down them really fast. Then we all showered and then made quesadillas and guacamole, which were delicious. Then after evening circle we went to bed out of our tents.
