Employment Opportunities

Leading a Wilderness Ventures trip can be one of the most rewarding experiences of your life. The opportunity to travel with a small group of young adults in spectacular outdoor settings, and to engage in meaningful conversations around the campsite and along the trail is a profoundly impacting experience, creating lasting and cherished memories for both our students and leaders.

Michael Alexander
Birmingham, Alabama

Trips as a Student: Grand Teton, Hawaii, Alaska College
Trips as a Leader: Cascade Olympic, Puget Sound, Rocky Mountain, Jackson Hole

"My first Wilderness Ventures trip, the Grand Teton Adventure, was a huge turning point in my life. It was my first experience in an extended group living situation. When I walked away at the end of that first summer in the Rocky Mountains I felt as though I understood myself better than I ever had before. Wilderness Ventures taught me to appreciate beautiful outdoor environments like Prince William Sound in Alaska and the Na Pali Coastline in Hawaii, but when I really look back on my time as a student, I'm especially thankful for the leadership and group interaction skills that are such an important part of any Wilderness Ventures trip."

Leading For Wilderness Ventures

A leadership position with us enables you to introduce young people to the merits of living simply while adventuring in the most beautiful wilderness and outdoor settings imaginable. Most importantly, you will have a positive and lasting impact on young people as they begin to develop their view of the world.

No other outdoor travel program for young adults has such comprehensive access to so many amazing and beautiful wilderness areas as does Wilderness Ventures. While you will have an opportunity to experience these areas as you climb, backpack, raft, sea kayak etc., we must be clear that you are there first and foremost for our students as it is their trip.

Our commitment to our leaders is unmatched in this field and their historic commitment to us and to our program philosophy is the most important factor in our reputation and success over the past thirty-seven years. We give our field staff the tools and preparation necessary to conduct a safe and rewarding experience for all, and once our trips begin our leaders are also given the highest level of trust and independence to make responsible decisions. While leading a Wilderness Ventures trip is extremely rewarding, it is usually demanding, considering the nature of our activities and our living conditions. Leading a group of ten to fifteen students with one other staff member, twenty-four hours a day for sixteen to forty days can test the patience of anyone. To be successful, you must be creative, self confident, and decisive when demanding situations arise. You must also possess a compassionate, patient and positive attitude at all times as well as a healthy sense of humor.

As a Wilderness Ventures leader, you are not only responsible for facilitating your group but are also a representative of our professional organization in our dealings with the National Park Service, the U.S. Forest Service, various state agencies, various foreign governments, occasional sub-contractors, parents and the general public.

Our eight day staff training in the incomparable setting of Jackson Hole is a perfect environment for beginning your summer and our three-day wrap up here enables you to provide us with positive feedback about how your trip can be improved for future years.

If you enjoy the out of doors but most importantly love the idea of sharing, teaching and working with energetic young adults, being a Wilderness Ventures leader has the potential of becoming a lifetime experience you will never forget.
