PLEASE NOTE: The itinerary described on this website has been changed from what is in the 2012 Wilderness Ventures catalog.  Due to the political climate in Guatemala we will be sailing in Belize (an activity we have done previously on this trip) to replace the jungle tour and visit to the Mayan ruins.  If you have any questions please call our office.

Surf Costa Rica’s Pacific Coast

Following our group flight from Miami, we’ll arrive in San Jose, Costa Rica. This tropical paradise is known worldwide for its expansive protected lands and coastlines filled with tropical birds, butterflies, jaguars, sloths, monkeys, and sea turtles. The Nicoya Peninsula, with its consistent breaks, is the perfect setting for 4 days of surfing instruction. From our private campground on the Pacific Coast, our instructors will teach us how to read the ocean to catch that perfect break, proper paddling, and stance techniques.

Zipline through a Cloud Forest

As we move from the coast to the Pacuare River, we’ll visit the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve where we’ll experience Costa Rica’s jungle canopy on the largest and best zipline in Costa Rica. Our vantage point high over the forest floor is a perfect opportunity to see monkeys, toucans, and an abundance of other tropical birds.

Raft the Pacuare River

Our next couple of days will be spent rafting the legendary whitewater of the Pacuare, considered one of the world’s finest tropical river experiences. We’ll plunge through steep, green-walled canyons with cascading waterfalls, and seemingly endless Class III and IV rapids, and then hike to spectacular swimming holes in the forest. From our riverside campsites, we’ll enjoy great Costa Rican food, then fall asleep to the sounds of this world-class river.

Sail the Cays of Belize

A short flight from San Jose takes us to Belize City, the capital of Central America’s only English speaking country. Aboard our private chartered sailboats, we’ll spend several days sailing and snorkeling amidst hundreds of sandy cays in this quiet paradise of turquoise waters, coconut palms, expansive beaches, and tiny fishing villages. We will anchor each night on deserted islands, feast on a variety of seafood, and explore a marine reserve frequented by manatees, dolphins, and hawksbill turtles.

Help With Marine Research

Learn about marine ecology while helping and exploring the environment. Observe and record a variety of marine species for a conservation organization while exploring a remote atoll, rich with tropical fish, dolphins and sea turtles.

SCUBA Dive Belize’s Barrier Reef

We’ll move offshore to our own private island on the world’s second largest barrier reef. During our 5-day stay, we’ll become certified PADI SCUBA divers, and then, on several open water dives, we’ll explore beautiful underwater canyons and sea caves teeming with colorful tropical fish. Previously certified students may upgrade to advanced SCUBA certification and those choosing not to dive will have excellent snorkeling opportunities. We’ll conclude our tropical water adventure with a Belize-style feast before our return flight back to Miami. (All students in our SCUBA diving program must pass a dive physical and cannot have used an inhaler or suffer from asthma.)
