What makes the European Alps Adventure special?
Concentrating ninety percent of our time on one of the finest treks in the Alps, you get lots of challenging hiking with an authentic cultural exploration of Europe.
What kind of sleeping accommodations can we expect?
Unlike the majority of most other Wilderness Ventures programs, there is no camping on the European Alps trip. Hiking or trekking is much different in Europe than in the United States. During the Haute Route, we will be staying in high mountain huts and in small villages. Depending on the specific hut or hostel, the accommodations range from dormitory style sleeping to shared rooms.
How hard is the hiking?
Our groups will trek on average from eight to twelve miles a day. That distance may seem long; however you must remember our packs will be quite a bit lighter than a normal backpacking trip. We will not be carrying any tents and the amount of food carried will be minimal. Food weight is light because each hut or hostel will be providing dinner and breakfast each day.
How is the food in Europe?
Excellent. You will eat extremely well on your trip in Europe. All of the hostels and the high mountain huts where we will stay serve full dinners and breakfasts that reflect the local cuisine. As we backpack, we will pick up lunch in the many small little villages that we pass through.
Do I have to fly to Geneva on my own?
No. We offer an optional escorted group flight that departs from New York, JFK. The trip officially begins in Geneva, but every year about 50% of students choose to take the escorted group flight. This option is available for the return flight back to JFK as well. If you choose to meet the group in Geneva on the first day, you will be met at the airport by one of your leaders. Additionally, there will be a leader to assist you with you departure from Geneva if you choose not to return on the escorted flight to JFK.
Do I need a passport?
All students traveling internationally with Wilderness Ventures must have a valid passport. If you do not already have a passport, we recommend you begin the application process as soon as you begin enrolling in your international WV trip. It normally takes six weeks to get a passport
Can my family meet me after my trip is over?
Yes. Each year, many families choose our international destinations as spots for family vacations. If you would like to meet your family after your trip is over, meeting times and places can be arranged through the WV office.
