Frequently Asked Questions
What makes the Southern Europe Adventure Special?
It's authenticity, variety of environments, experiences and activities in Europe. We will enjoy the opportunity to immerse ourselves in European culture and beauty.
How is the food in Europe?
Excellent. You will eat extremely well on your trip in Europe. All of the hostels and the high mountain huts where we will stay serve full dinners and breakfasts that reflect the local cuisine. We'll will pick up lunch in the many small little villages that we pass through.
Do I need to speak French or Italian to go on this adventure?
No. Your leaders will speak French or Italian, or both. However, if you speak French or Italian (or even German) you will have ample opportunity to speak these languages. Enrolling in this adventure is a unique way to experience a new language, or enhance a language you may already be studying.
Do I have to fly to Barcelona on my own?
No. We offer an optional escorted group flight that departs from New York, JFK. The trip officially begins in Barcelona, but every year about 50% of students choose to take the escorted group flight. This option is available from Paris back to JFK as well. If you choose to meet the group in Barcelona on the first day, you will be met at the airport by one of your leaders. Additionally, there will be a leader to assist you with you departure from Paris if you choose not to return on the escorted flight to JFK.
Where will I be sleeping?
While we are in towns and cities we will primarily sleep in hotels. While we are sea kayaking we will stay in cabins on the beach, and while we are backpacking we will be sleeping in high mountain huts. These huts have beds and bathrooms with hot showers. They will also provide delicious, hearty hot meals for dinner and breakfast.
What is the weather like?
The weather will be hot and sunny along the coast. In the mountains the weather behaves much like it does in our own Rockies. It is warm and sunny during the day with the occasional afternoon thunderstorm.
Can my family meet me in Paris at the end of the adventure?
Yes. Several families each year decide to travel in Europe before or after a Wilderness Ventures program. If you plan to do this, please give us a call and we will be happy arrange meeting places and times.
