Service Adventures

These wonderful adventures offer 40 to 80 hours of community service while providing fun, outdoor adventures amidst some of the most breathtaking natural environments in North America and abroad.

Laurel Haitoff

Mahopac, New York
Trips as a Student: Costa Rica Community Service, Hawaii Kauai, Yellowstone

"My Costa Rica Community Service Adventure was really amazing. My Trip Leaders were awesome and my group was fantastic. I got to be close friends with everyone on my trip. When I got home I felt like a stronger, more confident and more independent person. It was so eye opening to teach conversational English to children in need, and to help work on the San Gerardo de Rivas Elementary School. Restoring the beach habitat of sea turtles and whizzing through the forest canopy on a zipline reallly helped me appreciate the natural environment of this beautiful country."

Each of our Community Service Adventures offers a different combination of adventure and service. While you will get lots of physical activity and learn many new adventure skills. You will also settle into one or more base camps where you will participate in either a meaningful environmental project such as protecting habitat for turtles or providing assistance to another culture less fortunate than ourselves. On most of these trips, you will do both. We’ll spend our nights either camping in small two person tents on our domestic trips, or sleeping in small hostels or homes on our international programs.

Why These Trips Are Unique

We believe strongly in a blend of good physical adventure, with rewarding and meaningful service projects. We’ll work hard and play hard on each of these adventures.

What You Need to Provide

All you need to bring is your sleeping bag, sleeping pad, personal clothing and lots of enthusiasm. (We offer sleeping bag and sleeping pad rentals for some of our domestic programs at a nominal charge.)

Our Student Service Adventures vary from 16 to 22 days and are conducted in the most spectacular natural environments around the glob and in the American West. Student Service Adventures allow teenage students to earn between 40 and 80 hours of teen community service while interspersing a wide range of outdoor adventure activities. All of our substantive student service adventures connect teenage students with their environment and culture and engage in integrated and fun outdoor adventure activities.

All Student Service Adventures are conducted in small groups of well-supervised teenage students in a nurturing and supportive environment. If a service adventure group is traveling to a Spanish-speaking destination, such as our student service opportunities in Costa Rica, Peru and Ecuador, students will engage in introductory language instruction and have the chance to apply their newfound Spanish language skills throughout the service adventure.

Wilderness Ventures has been conducting outdoor adventures since 1973, longer than any student service adventure program out there. Our service project on this first summer adventure involved planning native shrubs on the shoreline of Image Lake in the Glacier Peak Wilderness. Today, our student service adventures and teen community service programs engage in meaningful service work in Hawaii, Alaska, the Yellowstone Region and the American Southwest. Internationally, our student service adventures travel to both Central and South America, as well as Fiji. For more information about our meaningful and inspiring student service adventure opportunities, call 800-533-2281.
