What makes the Fiji Community Service Adventure special?
Fiji offers the freedom of uncrowded places and the joy of the friendliest people on earth. We will have an opportunity to make an impact on the lives of the local people and more than likely their graciousness, hospitality and appreciation will make a lasting impression on all of us. This type of exchange between two cultures - based on kindness - is an invaluable and lasting experience that crosses borders, embraces differences and celebrates commonalities.
What will the weather be like in Fiji?
Fiji enjoys an ideal island climate and boasts the highest sunshine factor in the South Pacific. Due to the prevailing southeast trade winds, Fiji's humid, tropical climate is moderated during most of the year, eliminating extreme heat and extreme humidity. The island climate does not change much with the seasons, and we will be in Fiji during the dry season. Even though it is the winter season in the South Pacific it remains in the mid 70's to mid 80's during our time in the islands. When we are in the Fijian highlands nights can get a little chilly after sunset. The highlands can also have a bit more rain than the coastal regions.
Do I need to know a different language besides English?
No. Fiji has three official languages. The Fijians speak Fijian, the Indians speak Hindi and both cultures speak English to each other. Schoolchildren are taught in their native language until they are proficient in English, which thereafter is the medium of instruction. This means that English-speaking visitors have little trouble getting around and enjoying the country.
What kind of service work can I expect to perform?
We will be performing a variety of service projects on our trip. Each year the service projects vary depending on the need that is expressed by the members of the various communities that we visit. The activities vary from year to year depending on need, but we will always work with a project that is beneficial to the local people - infusing labor, time, energy, and financial resources into impoverished areas in Fiji.
Do I need a passport?
All students traveling internationally with Wilderness Ventures must have a valid passport. If you do not already have a passport, we recommend you begin the application process as soon as you begin enrolling in your international WV trip. It normally takes six weeks to get a passport
Can my family meet me after my trip is over?
Yes. Each year, many families choose our international destinations as spots for family vacations. If you would like to meet your family after your trip is over, meeting times and places can be arranged through the WV office.
